For more than two decades, Yuyao Boli Pipe Industry has designed and manufactured stainless steel corrugated tubing for gas and plumbing applications around the world. During that time, corrugated stainless steel tubing, commonly abbreviated as CSST, has grown from a specialized alternative into one of the most specified piping products in residential, commercial, and industrial construction. This guide explains what CSST is, how it is made, where it delivers the most value, and which factors deserve attention when selecting tubing for your project.
Corrugated stainless steel tubing is a flexible piping system produced from stainless steel strip that is formed into a tube with a continuous corrugated profile. The repeating ridges give the tubing its flexibility, so it can be bent and routed around beams, studs, and other obstacles with far fewer fittings than rigid black iron or copper pipe. The stainless steel body provides strength and corrosion resistance, while the corrugations act like bellows, absorbing movement and vibration in the line.
CSST is commonly used to distribute natural gas and propane inside buildings. It also appears in a growing number of water supply connections, including water heaters, bathroom basins, kitchen sinks, and shower systems. Because it can be supplied in long continuous lengths, CSST dramatically reduces the number of joints in a piping run, and every eliminated joint is a potential leak that no longer exists.
The performance of CSST begins on the production line. At our facility in Yuyao, we start with stainless steel strip in grades such as 304 and 316L. The strip is precision-slitted to width and fed through roll-forming equipment that shapes it into a tube. Automated welding systems then fuse the longitudinal seam, and the corrugation profile is applied to create the characteristic bellows-like structure.
Quality control is critical at every stage. After welding, the tubing is annealed to restore corrosion resistance, cleaned in ultrasonic washing lines, and subjected to pressure testing before it is cut and fitted with end connections. We operate 25 stainless steel bellows production lines, alongside more than 100 CNC lathes and automated welding stations, to maintain consistent wall thickness, uniform corrugation geometry, and reliable sealing surfaces.
Why do installers and specifiers increasingly choose CSST over rigid piping? The advantages become clear on the first job site.
From a sustainability perspective, the long service life of stainless steel means fewer material replacements over the lifetime of the building. CSST is also fully recyclable at the end of its useful life, which strengthens its environmental credentials.
The largest application for corrugated stainless steel tubing is natural gas and propane distribution inside buildings. Gas utilities, mechanical contractors, and homeowners have all adopted CSST because it simplifies the path from the gas meter or manifold to each appliance.
For stoves, cooktops, ovens, and gas water heaters, a flexible connection line makes the final hookup quick and service-friendly. Our stainless steel flexible corrugated gas tube is manufactured for this exact purpose, with a smooth inner bore for proper gas flow and reliable sealing when used with the matching connector system.

Many modern buildings conceal gas piping inside walls, floor structures, or service shafts. These applications demand CSST with an additional protective outer layer that resists flame or mechanical damage. The 304 stainless steel corrugated buried wall gas tube in our range is designed specifically for concealed gas installation, combining the flexibility of CSST with the protection required for embedded runs.

Plumbers specify it for water heater connections, basin supply lines, kitchen sprayers, and shower hoses because the same flexibility and corrosion resistance that benefit gas lines also apply to hot and cold water service.
For general-purpose hot and cold water hookups, our 304 stainless steel universal cold and hot explosionproof corrugated pipe is designed to withstand pressure fluctuations and thermal cycling, giving contractors a single dependable product for a wide range of jobs.

In the bathroom, corrugated stainless steel appears in retractable shower hoses, double-layer insulated shower pipes, and vacuum-insulated flexible connectors. On the supply side, stainless steel accessories such as hexagonal nuts, straight connectors, and crimping sleeves complete the system and ensure leak-free performance at every joint.
Safety is the reason most often cited when engineers evaluate gas piping materials, and CSST has specific requirements that every installer should know.
The most critical point is bonding and grounding. Because CSST is an electrical conductor with relatively thin walls, a lightning strike near the building can cause arcing or even puncture the tubing if the system is not properly bonded. National and local electrical codes specify how CSST systems must be bonded, and installers must verify this step on every job.
Beyond bonding, a safe CSST installation follows manufacturer instructions for minimum bend radius, support spacing, and fitting selection. Sharp kinks restrict gas flow and weaken the tube wall, while incorrect fittings can compromise the seal. Proper training and code compliance are essential for any contractor working with CSST. Selecting the correct grade of stainless steel is one of the most important decisions when specifying CSST. The grade determines how the tubing will perform in different environments, so the choice should always match the installation conditions.
| Grade | Typical Applications | Key Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| 304 | Indoor gas lines, plumbing connections, appliance hoses | Good corrosion resistance, reliable strength, cost-effective |
| 316 / 316L | Coastal and industrial installations, demanding gas systems | Superior resistance to chlorides and aggressive atmospheres |
For most indoor gas and water systems, 304 stainless steel offers an excellent balance of performance and economy. If the tubing will be exposed to marine air, de-icing chemicals, or industrial pollutants, 316L provides extra protection and is worth the additional investment.
Corrugated stainless steel tubing has earned its place as a mainstream piping solution through decades of field performance. Its flexibility, corrosion resistance, and reduced joint count make it an attractive option for new construction and retrofit projects alike, provided it is manufactured to consistent standards and installed by qualified professionals.
